Jackson MI Amtrak Project

Jackson MI Amtrak Project

In a joint effort with MDOT, Michigan Department of Rail, Amtrak, AECOM, and Anlaan Corporation, the 100-year-old bridges of Jackson and Mechanic Street were successfully demolished and replaced within 107-hours. This project included over 1,300 feet of steel sheeting, replacing 4,000 feet of railroad track, and rebuilding multiple railroad grade crossings in addition to the Jackson and Mechanic Street Bridges. Amtrak and Norfolk Southern were able to maintain railroad traffic for the duration of the project excluding the 107-hour outage for the demolition and reconstruction of both Jackson & Mechanic Street bridges. Many forms of accelerated construction techniques were utilized to complete the work within the limited track outage window. The most notable perhaps was the use of Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT’s). With the help of the SPMT’s the existing superstructure demolition was minimized and the new superstructures were nearly fully assembled prior to the outage and transported into place.
